Traditionally when people spoke of Cat’s Eye they were referring to a type of mineral called Chrysoberyl. Chrysoberyl is most often yellow, yellowish green, or brown in color. When polished it exhibits a characteristic that resembles the pupil of a cat in the dark just as a light hits it. Other minerals also exhibit this phenomenon but the effect is inferior to that created in Chrysoberyl. The wearing of Cat’s Eye was believed to increase wealth and provide protection against ones enemies.
Most of today’s Cat’s Eye Beads are man made, created from fiber optic materials obtained by the fusing of quartz fibers that are then cut into a variety of shapes. They come in a variety of colors. However, because of the material used the color red will appear as a dark orange and the color black will appear as a dark grey.
